The Bond Release Interactive Forum 2002 is technical forum, co-sponsored by the North Dakota Public Service Commission,
Reclamation Division; the North Dakota State University, Animal and Range Sciences Department; and the Office of
Technology Transfer (OTT), Western Regional Coordinating Center (WRCC), Office of Surface Mining (OSM), Denver,
Colorado - was held August 27 through 29, 2002, at the Holiday Inn, Bismarck, North Dakota. See Week at a Glance

Part I - Introducing GIS, Digital Imagery, and Volumetrics
Mike Price, Mining and Earth Science Solutions Manager, ESRI.
A half-day workshop for coal mining and reclamation professionals new to GIS,
and those wishing to see the new ArcView 8.1 (ArcGIS) software including ArcMap,
ArcCatalog and ArcToolbox. The workshop provides an overview of GIS applications
in Mining and Earth Sciences. Demonstrations introduce current GIS theory
and practice. GIS data sources for coal mine regulators, operators, and
reclamation specialists will be explored. This workshop is suited for professionals with
minimal GIS experience. (A two-page workshop outline available upon request).

Part II - Advanced Modeling, Emphasizing Digital Imagery in GIS Applications

Evening workshop highlights ArcGIS extensions for mine operations and environmental
management. Demonstration activities introduce Spatial, Image, and 3D extensions
for geologic data visualization and advanced geospatial analysis. Spatial processes,
including terrain creation, slope analysis, viewsheds, volumetric calculation, and
watershed definition, are introduced. Image analysis procedures including image
registration, vector capture and interpolation (heads-up digitizing), and simple
reclassifications are demonstrated. (A two-page workshop outline available upon request).
