SME Annual Meeting & Exhibit--100 Years of Mining Research

The OSM National Technical Transfer Team (NTTT) participates in this annual event as an exhibitor. The NTT booth distributes information about OSM, such as Applied Science program information, and showcases successes in reclamation, wildlife habitat enhancement, and paperless permitting. Popular items include CD's relating to various reclamation techniques, research reports, manual, guidelines, and public domain software, in addition to OSM's annual reports and links to OSM's web pages.

2010 DOI Conference on the Environment
April 26 to April 30, 2010, Portland, OR
The conference will provide a forum for Interior staff to meet and exchange information on a wide variety of environmental and natural resource topics and issues. It is being sponsored by the Office of Environmental Policy and Compliance and hosted by the National Park Service. Concurrent sessions will be held including training sessions, educational field trips, exhibits, papers, panels and poster presentations.

Protecting Threatened Bats at Coal Mines:
A Technical interactive Forum
August 30-September 3, 2010 Charleston, WV
Background: This forum will assess the impact to all hibernating bat species in the eastern half of the U.S. of the recent deadly outbreak and spread of a fungus, new to the North American continent, known as the White-Nose Syndrome. The forum will also assess the effectiveness of the newly developed Range-wide Indiana Bat Protection and Enhancement Plan Guidelines for developing coal mining permits for an endangered bat species developed as a joint effort by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Office of Surface Mining, and the Interstate Mining Compact Commission. This forum is necessary to inform all of the affected states and agencies of the cooperative efforts that will be necessary to protect this important life form.
Topics Covered: (1) White-Nose Syndrome Impacts on Bats and Mining; (2) Federal Efforts for the Recovery of the Indiana Bat; (3) Status of State Permitting/Recovery/Mitigation/Implementation Strategies; (4) Status of On the Ground Recovery Efforts; and (5) Ongoing Research Efforts and Research Needs.
Target Audience: Representatives of State Regulatory Authorities, OSM, State Wildlife Agencies, USFWS, Consultants, and University experts concerned with protection of the Threatened bats associated with coal mining.
