Hispanic Engineering and Science Organization Career Fair, New Mexico Institute of Mining & Technology

Dates/Location

September 20, 2007 - Socorro, NM

Background

Warren (Jerry) White Vern Maldonado attended the Career Fair at New Mexico Tech.  They answered questions from students regarding careers in government service, what types of degrees OSM is looking for, how OSM’s selection process works, what is expected of employees in different pay levels, pay and benefits, job application criteria and process, etc.  Surprisingly, many students had not seriously considered a career in government service.  The question and answer session was directed by Ms. Chelsea Buffington, Director, Career Services & Manager, Fidel Student Center, who bridged the gap between students and sponsors.

Some students were surprised to realize that there are many technical positions in Science and Engineering in government.  There is a belief that those jobs are exclusive to private industry.  Students in attendance said that they saw the Federal government jobs from a new perspective as a result of the session.  During the Career Fair, approximately 60 students received OSM literature and a total of 21 Resumes were collected.

The recruiters were asked by Ms. Siona Curtis–Bradley if OSM would be willing to have someone from the Bureau give a presentation on Environmental Science Opportunities, Soils Work Relative to Mine Reclamation, Biological Impact Assessment and Revegetation as part of NM Tech’s Environmental Science course being taught by Dr. Bruce Harrison (bruce@nmt.edu).  They are also interested in the modeling done by OSM through Technical Transfer / TIPS.  The school routinely brings in technical professionals from various public and private sector entities, in order to give students a feel for the environmental science field and opportunities relative to the field.

Topics Covered

Engineering and science careers in government service, including what types of degrees OSM is looking for to fill future positions.

Target Audience

College engineering and environmental science students.
